Dental Hygienist

A good daily dental hygiene routine will ensure your teeth and gums are rid of the daily build up of plaque and tartar, but there will always be places that you cannot clean properly. Regular dental hygienist appointments for teeth cleaning at JME dental, remove the plaque and tartar in those harder to reach places, preventing cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease.

Gum disease and tooth decay is the most common worldwide oral disease affecting every family. Over 80% of cavities occur on chewing surfaces where brushing cannot reach food left trapped after a meal or snack, and saliva or fluoride have no access either. This is why regular appointments with one of our dental hygienists in Galway are so beneficial, our hygienists can reach all the places that the toothbrush cannot!

Dental Hygienist Services

Scale and Polish: This involves removing plaque, tartar (calculus), and stains from the teeth using specialized dental instruments. Regular scale and polishes, coupled with maintaining good oral hygiene, help prevent gum disease and cavities.

Periodontal Examinations: Our Dental Hygienist will assess the overall oral health of your mouth, making note of any information relevant to assessing your periodontal health, including x-rays, pocket depths, bleeding and plaque scores. This information allows our hygienist to accurately assess the level of disease present, and provides baseline measurements against which to judge the success of ongoing treatment.

Root Planing (Advanced Gum Treatment): In cases where a patient may have more advanced gum disease (periodontitis). Should you require treatment of periodontal disease, our hygienists can provide a comprehensive advanced gum treatment, which is carried out under local anaesthetic.

Application of Preventive Treatments: Dental hygienists often apply preventive treatments to help protect patients' teeth. This may include the application of fluoride treatments to strengthen tooth enamel and the application of dental sealants to protect vulnerable areas of the teeth from decay.

Patient Education: Dental hygienists play a crucial role in educating patients about proper oral hygiene practices. They provide instruction on effective brushing and flossing techniques, as well as recommendations for oral hygiene products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss. They may also offer guidance on nutrition and its impact on oral health.

How ofter should I see a Dental Hygienist?

We recommend that most patients visit every six months, in between their regular dental check-ups. You may need to visit more frequently if you are a smoker, have gum disease or you are pregnant.

Does going to the Dental Hygienist hurt?

Our dental hygienists are very experienced at cleaning teeth, they have done it for many years, for thousands of patients, so you could not be in better hands. They will always ensure that you are comfortable at all times, and will stop if necessary, or can administer an anaesthetic to help you get through the appointment.

How often should I floss?

Flossing of the teeth once per day helps to prevent cavities from forming between the teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing also helps to keep gums healthy.

What type of toothbrush should I use?

For a manual or electric toothbrushes, the most important feature of the brush is having “soft” or “extra-soft” bristles. Any other strength of bristle can be harmful to gums and the structure of teeth.  We generally recommend electric toothbrushes at JME Dental as they have been proven to remove 35-40% more plaque than manual brushing. It's up to each patient what type of toothbrush they use for cleaning their teeth, as long as they use one!
